Why you should use a waterproof phone case on vacation

I can't swim, and apparently, my phone can't swim either.

During one of our trips, I took my "waterproof" phone into the ocean for a quick pic. I thought I knew the risks, but I also figured that my phone could handle a little water. I was so wrong.

While most phones are waterproof or water-resistant, that claim does not apply to ocean water. Even a little salt water that gets into your phone can cause massive damage. After that day, my phone was useless and I was left without my phone for the rest of my vacation. While I was able to salvage some information from the phone, the phone itself was a total loss.

This is when I realized the importance of having a waterproof, protective case or pouch every time I go into the water.

There are many types of protective pouches and most of them have great reviews. However, we do recommend that you buy one that floats. This means that if for some reason the phone falls, you don't need to worry about retrieving the phone from the bottom of the pool or the ocean. It is always floating right in front of you. These pouches tend to be a little bigger than other pouches, and they can be a little more confusing to use, so make sure that you read the reviews and directions before you use them.

We bought the Segmart 2019 Universal Floating Waterproof Phone Pouch from Amazon.com and had decent results. Just make sure to get as much air out of the pouch as possible before you seal in your phone. Also, keep in mind that pictures and video can be impacted by the water on the outside of the pouch.

We also recommend that you put your phone on its brightest setting so that you can see properly while out in the elements. If possible, test your phone while it is inside the pouch before you go into the water. You will not be able to adjust the settings as much once you are out in the open waters.

The phone also gave us a heat warning at some point during our trip. However, we are not sure if this is because of the pouch or the actual hot weather. It was probably a combination of both.

Overall it was a positive experience.

We took the following pictures with the pouch on. As you can see most of the pictures look great. However, a couple of pictures were ruined because there was water on the outside of the pouch. Still the phone remained dry which is the most important part.

We also recommend that you buy your case well before you go on vacation. While these poaches are the typically expensive, you will end up paying more money if you buy these on location than in you order it before your trip.

We forgot one of our pouches at home and we bought one right before going on the expedition. We were so afraid to use it because it seemed to be flimsy. Thankfully it did do the job.

There are so many pouches available online, make sure to pick the one that is best for you, and buy one today!

We must also add that we still paid for a professional to take pictures while we were out in the water. While we were not blown away by the photos, we would never be able to capture these images with our phone. There was just too much glare, and taking pictures with a phone inside of a pouch is not the ideal situation. However, I found that our pictures even with the pouch, were just as good, if not better than some of the pictures that were taken with a more powerful and traditional camera.
