Main Tips:

Take Public Transportation

Be prepared for fees

Buy a CityPass to save money!

Make sure to take a cruise

We recently travelled to San Francisco and Las Vegas. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency which is a magnificent hotel right by the historic Ferry Building. We managed to get a great deal on this hotel online. So how did we do it?

In this case, we used booking.com which at the time offered the best deal for this location and we stayed the 4th Night Free with a promotion from Hyatt. Even with sites offering exclusive Teacher Discounts this was just the best deal for us. Plus, at such an iconic location, it was very hard to pass up.

We had a great stay at the Hyatt, it was in a great location and we found it very easy to get around town. There was a trolley station right outside which made getting around very easy. There was also a muni-station and a BART station across the street.

Our favorite part of the Hyatt Regency was the incredible Lobby. It is a great place to relax and take pictures. We enjoyed our stay, we only wish that the hotel had a pool, however, there was so much to do, that we did not miss it.

Just keep in mind that In San Francisco there is a Destination Fee and we paid Hyatt a resort fee as well. Make sure that you find out about any fees that may come with your stay before you book. Especially if you are on a budget.

While we stayed at the Hyatt this time, I prefer to stay at Extended Stay hotels to avoid resort fees. I find that these hotels have the best overall experience for the price. Plus many offer free breakfast.

Touring the City

While in San Francisco, we searched local deals to try to get the best possible experience. We stumbled upon CityPASS on the Web and it was one of the best finds of the trip. We were able to go all over the city, take a few cable car rides and we throughly enjoyed our cruise on the bay. The pass saved us money and gave us plenty of activities to do in the short time that we were there.

We also recommend taking the Big Bus. You are able to go through all of the city and visit the Golden Gate Bridge. Its a great deal!

TRANSPORTATION We did not have a car. We were lucky enough to have a train stop next to our hotel, so we took the BART Train from the airport to the hotel. We each bought a $20 ticket that was good for the round trip. Taking an Uber would have been more expensive and with city traffic, it would have only been 5 minutes faster than the train.

If you are renting a car, keep in mind that chances are that you will most likely be paying for parking on the street and at your hotel. And parking ain't cheap. Within the city, we had the muni-pass though CityPass and were able to get around with ease, you can also purchase the Munipass at the stations and online. We did plenty of walking as well. Please be advised that it is windy and because of their microclimates, San Francisco can get real cold and real hot very quickly depending where you are and the time of the day. Make sure that you are aware of the many micro-climates within the city. We each had packable jackets that we used.

Fisherman's Wharf is the most touristy part of the city, its easy to get to from just about any hotel that you choose. However, my favorite part of San Francisco will always be Lombard Street.

You can also use the Sightseeing Pass. Keep in mind that both of these services are different. You should pick the card that is best for your budget and needs.

Other than taking the Bus tour we recommend that you definitely take one of the many available cruises on the bay. They range in prices and availability, just make sure that you search for one that is right for you.

We took the tour around the Alcatraz On the Escape from the Rock Cruise, since it also includes the Golden Gate Bridge. However, our tour did not include going on the island.

If you are interested in going to Alcatraz, you can get your tickets from Ticketnetwork.com.
