Airport Parking?
Is it better than Ride Share?

Airport Parking can be a great time and money saver, however, you have to be very careful with where you park. We have had some great experiences with Airport Parking, but we have had some horrible experiences as well.

First of all, Airport Parking is hugely under-appreciated. A long time ago, parking at the airport was expensive and not worth the price. However, in order to compete with Uber and Lyft the prices have come down substantially. For most people, Airport Parking is actually a very smart financial strategy. However, you should always compare the options since prices always depend on your personal situation.

Our experience with Airport Parking at JFK in New York City was great! We used the Crowne Plaza service to park for 11 days on our trip to Italy during Winter break, and everything was wonderful. They take your car and park it at an adjacent location. The car was right outside waiting for us, nice and toasty, when we were dropped off by the shuttle. The best part was that our price was still lower than taking an Uber or Lyft to the airport from NJ, including the tolls. We highly recommend them.

Newark Airport

The Good

Newark Airport has provided us with both positive and negative experiences. We highly recommend Jiffy Parking at EWR. They may be a little more expensive than other parking services, but they do offer convenient and reliable services.

We took advantage of the Way.com exclusive deal at the Newark Airport Hilton. Our parking was on lot to the left of the hotel. They also have an indoor parking deck on the premises, so make sure that you note where you are parking before you arrive at the hotel in order to avoid surprises. We had a very easy time parking our car and we were on a shuttle bus to the airport fairly quickly. The trip to Terminal A was about 6 minutes. Keep in mind that many pilots and flight attendants stay at the Hilton and they have priority when it comes to the shuttles. The hotel will usually add another shuttle when this happens, but it is always good idea to give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport.

The Bad

We used EZ Way Parking and it was a horrible experience. Our flight was early in the morning on a busy air-travel weekend (that’s when teachers travel) during Spring Break. Our original flight to San Francisco was cancelled the night before because of a horrible storm, and we had a 7AM Flight on a Saturday morning. However, we had our “reservation” with EZ Way parking and we were not worried about it. I obviously did not have my intuition working well for me that day.

First, the place was incredibly hard to find. We drove by it and had to do a long loop to get back to the location, once there, they informed us that the lot was full. That’s it, no other guidance. The lot is just full. We saw that there were about 3 other cars there in the same situation and we didn’t argue, we just drove off trying to find an open spot somewhere and trying to figure out what to do.

On one of the busiest travel days of the year, with countless flights cancelled the night before, we were driving around looking for a parking spot with a cross-country flight scheduled to take off in an hour-and-half.

We had no idea what to do other than drive. We did a couple of loops around the airport trying to figure out what to do. Then as if by divine intervention, we came across Jiffy Parking while we were looping back to the airport. I still can’t tell you how we found it or where it is without looking it up. Jiffy was a huge self-parking lot and it had quite a few spots available. As soon as I parked and took out our luggage, the shuttle was behind our car. It was just there - behind our car waiting for us to hop on and go. In our case, It was a coincidence, but according to their reviews it happens quite often.

The Ugly

On our way to Orlando, we decided to use the AirPark Newark lot. It was very easy to park and the shuttle driver picked us up right away and took us to the airport. The return trip was also very convenient.

Unfortunately, once I got to my car, I discovered that someone had hit the car and left a dent on the side of the car. We reported the incident to the front and they contacted their manager. While the damage was not major, I did not appreciate that the company did not respond to any of my messages or correspondence. Chances are that you will not have any problems parking here, but you are parking at your own risk and they obviously do not care about their customers.

Jiffy Parking

Jiffy Airport Parking

We had to pay more for Jiffy if we would have reserved with them in advance, but they came up big for us when we needed them. I really appreciate their service. They had us at our terminal in less than 10 minutes. We also didn’t have to wait long to get picked up. So do use airport parking, but be careful who you select. We found it strange that EZ Way did not ask for payment information when we made our reservations. That should have been a red flag. I am sure that if they had spaces available, it would have been a great deal, however, that was not our case on a busy travel weekend. There are plenty of great places, research each one of your choices and don’t go for the least expensive option. Happy Parking!
